The ASCAP Foundation Irving Burgie Scholarship
The ASCAP Foundation Chein García Alonso Scholarship was created by the family of Latin songwriter Chein García Alonso (1953-2014) to honor his memory and talent. The scholarship benefits a songwriter, musician and/or vocalist of Latino heritage from a Newark, New Jersey high school who plans to study music at the college level.
Born in Havana, Cuba, García Alonso immigrated to the United States in 1968 and resided in Newark, New Jersey. He had a successful career as a songwriter in both Spanish and English, having his songs recorded by artists such as Michael Jackson, Lara Fabian, Boyz II Men, Rocío Jurado, Santana, Willie Chirino, Alicia Keys and many more. His song “Experiencia Religiosa” appeared on Enrique Iglesias’s self-titled debut album, which won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album. The song also hit #1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart. García Alonso released his own work as a singer/songwriter in 2010 titled Nace Una Canción. He was an ASCAP member and won eight ASCAP Awards throughout his career.
