New York, NY, May 15, 2006: The ASCAP Foundation is pleased to announce the dates for its annual Musical Theatre Workshop in New York. Directed by Academy Award-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Prince of Egypt, Godspell, Pippin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame), the workshop will take place on June 5, 7 and 8, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. sharp at ASCAP's New York offices at One Lincoln Plaza (Broadway between 63rd and 64th Streets) on the 5th floor.
"Due to the overwhelming success of the recent musical theatre seminars held in Los Angeles earlier this year, we have decided to adopt the same format for the New York workshop," said Stephen Schwartz. "Instead of presenting excerpts from submitted projects, we will offer an intense series of seminars focusing on the key elements of a musical."
Each evening will be devoted to a separate topic:
June 5: Producing Musicals
June 7: Music and Lyrics
June 8: Librettos
There will be an opportunity at each session to exchange ideas, ask questions, and learn from some of the leading practitioners and authorities from the world of musical theatre. Scheduled to participate are Lynn Ahrens (Tony Award-winning lyricist: Ragtime); Mark Hollmann (Tony Award-winning composer/lyricist: Urinetown); Rupert Holmes (Tony Award-winning librettist and composer/lyricist: Drood); and Joseph Stein (Tony Award-winning librettist: Fiddler on the Roof).
The workshop is free of charge and open to everyone, regardless of performing right affiliation. All aspiring musical theatre writers are encouraged to attend. Admission is on a first come, first served basis. For further information, please call Michael Kerker at 212-621-6234.
